Waterloopbos -Marknesse

Waterloopbos? Watercourse forest! The Dutch are good at engineering solutions that solve challenges with water, like harbors and dykes. The ideas were tested at the hydrological research center Waterloopkundig Laboratorium De Voorst between 1952 and 1995. In 2002 Natuurmonumenten bought the land and opened for the public. Slowly the models in the forest are restored.

You can see various models and test areas. Like for the Deltaworks with giant concrete parts which are make any brutalist fan happy. A location where you can test your solution against real waves, a part to test the locks of IJmuiden, the harbor of Bangkok and many more. Yes, they didn’t limit their research to The Netherlands, but also shared their knowledge with countries around the globe. Besides the Deltaworks, which is an impressive model, I liked the models of rivers and the Maasvlakte centrale.
