Kerkennacht June 23, 2017

On Kerkennacht, Churchnight, the Churches in Haarlem open their doors for musicians and everybody is welcome. The evening started outside as Martijn Comes composed a new piece for the carillon of the saint Bavo church, which consists of 47 bells. A well hidden garden in the centre of town was the perfect place to enjoy the music.

The Haarlems Student Koor did three half-hour sessions in the Nieuwe Kerk. The next day they gave a concert in the same church and this was their dress rehearsal. The show was about Latin-American music and they collaborated with World Music department of Codarts  which worked very well. It was a great show and a perfect teaser to sell the last tickets.

In the Fonteinkerk, a former cinema, Chaimaa Rochdi performed together with Glen Sedoc and Michel Duijves. You can call it anything you want, like a wonder. Obbay Salloum, a pianist from Syria, played before Chaimaa. He wanted to end his set with the same song Chaimaa planned to open hers. They never met before, but directly decided to sing it together. Later that night they did it again at the second church Obbay was playing.

The Doopsgezinde Kerk is an old simple church without unnecessary decoration. It is all about the people there. In the middle of that warm and welcoming community The Irrational Library was sharing their vision of the world and the mess we make of it.
