Tulipday 2026

17-jan-2026

Tulipday, in January, in nature it will take a while before the tulips are in bloom, but… the tulip season started with the traditional, since 2012, kick off at the Museumplein in Amsterdam. Next to the temporary ice rink a section an was setup with 200.000 tulips!

The flowers were not only for show, visitors could pick them for free. The price was time! You had to be there one and a half hour before opening. When the gates opened the crowd surged forward, ignoring the barriers, which didn’t help in the flow of people. All that for ten tulips.

As I waited in the line I heard very few people speaking Dutch. So this is an event for the tourists.

Why did I go? The anti-pesticide group of Extinction Rebellion was there, protesting against pesticide use in the flower industry. My goal was to make photos from within the flower arena. It was a pity XR didn’t have a space next to the fence of the flower area, but they managed to get in with one banner! It was a good action overall as many visitors were informed about pesticides.

Inside the flower area the atmosphere was good. People enjoyed picking their favorite colors. Where some went for all colors, others carefully composed their perfect bouquet.
