Singer Songwriter Cirkel Haarlem: Open Mic Night XV

The 4th of July was the night of the Fifteenth  Open Mic Night organised by the Singer Songwriter Cirkel Haarlem at café Briljant. At the previous edition a couple of the musicians pitched the idea to cover a guilty pleasure.

Rob Alphenaar left the bar unattended and opened the evening. He wasn’t afraid or petrified to do Gloria Gaynor’s ‘I Will Survive’. Jan Willem Reitsma didn’t share a guilty pleasure and brought a musical history lesson to the piano with ‘Twisted’ by Wardell Gray and Annie Ross. Pien van de Rest loved to sing Disney songs and added ‘A Change In Me’ from the film Beauty and The Beast to her jazz set. Mark Werkman had plenty of songs in mind when the guilty pleasures idea came up. He started with ‘She Got The Look’ by Roxette, Tiffany’s  ‘I Think We’re Alone Now’ would be the perfect setup to rickroll the audience. He didn’t… he kept it close to home with and finished his set with a song by the Dutch formation the Vengaboyz…. ‘We’re Going to Ibiza’!

Anouk hosted the Open Mic Night for the last time. She will be missed and earned her place on the wall at café Briljant. The Early Spring had a hard time to find places to play short sets and test new songs. When she heard about this Open Mic Night she had to participate and drove up from Belgium. She choose Crazy by Gnarly Barkley to add to the guilty pleasure collection. She had a hard time finding places to play? Yes, that struggle is over as she heard about Stagefinder.nl.

Gwan Brandhorst opened with ‘Love You More’ by Racoon. Judith Wesselius joined him to cover Johnny Cash’s cover of ‘I See a Darkness’. They finished their set with Cher’s ‘Believe’. Dutch Cassidy ‘Shook It Off’ like Taylor Swift.

It has been a while and the improvised improvisation group To The Wolves was back on stage with The Early Spring, Anouk, Jan-Willem,  Max Misljencevic, Judith, Chaimaa Rochdi, Jan Willem, Gwan, Dan German and Dick Stegenga.
